MONTENEGRO GUIDEBOOK - General info
Montenegro is quite new and unknown location to most people. But after the visit we paid to the country I can definitely say that there is great potential and there is a group of people that are definitely making an effort to develop this potential. The country itself is quite small and traveling around is a matter of hours. Though distances are relatively short sometimes changing locations can be tricky, as the landscape is definitely mountainous and roads are winding through deep canyons, so some extra attention will never be too much. Hitch-hiking is common and many people are still doing it. Often at the busy locations you will have to wait on the queue with some old people going to the villages. NB: have in mind that along the coast situation is a bit different, tourism is well developed there and you see on the road mainly expensive and foreign cars that are not very willing to take hitch-hikers, but still it works with some more waiting.
As mentioned above the territory of Montenegro is occupied of canyons and mountains, as a result opportunities for climbing are almost everywhere. However, there are some location that are already developed and of course still in developing, also some of the spots definitely deserve some special attention. Having in mind some transport and cultural specifics we split the country into two main zones. – Continental and Coastal.
Coastal area
Occupies the most western parts of the country, including the coast and some territories inside the country around cities of Podgorica and Niksic. Atmosphere is very friendly and attractive a strange mixture between Mediterranean ambience and Balkan mentality. There are three developed sport crags, a few alpine and many opportunities for future work.
Moraca river canyon – sport, multi-pitch sport and trad
Kotor – sport and alpine
Niksic – sport
Continental area
Occupies the territory stretching from the center of the country west to the Serbian border. Atmosphere is definitely Balkan and for me as a Bulgarian is very home-looking-like. The highest mountains are located here, so expect blazing mountain views all around. There are three developed sport climbing crags and thousands of opportunities for mountaineering and alpine climbing.

Dumitor – multi-pitch sport and trad climbing
